Meet the Team
Our team consists of highly motivated young scientists at different career stages

Principal Investigator
Assistant Professor
Polymnia Georgiou (BSc, Ph.D)
I performed my Ph.D training at the University of Surrey (U.K.), where I studied the neurobiological changes associated with drug addiction and relapse. I joined the University of Maryland School of Medicine as a postdoctoral research fellow and junior faculty. My research focused on the investigation of (1) sex differences and the involvement of stress hormones on maladaptive decision making and (2) the hormonal mechanisms underlying mood disorders. Following my postdoctoral training I joined the University of Cyprus as an MSCA fellow investigating the epigenetic mechanisms of hormone-related stress susceptibility. Now as an Assistant Professor at UWM, the Georgiou lab will focus on the understanding of the neuroendocrinological underpinnings of disorders associated with dysregulation of the brain reward system. In my free time I enjoy cooking, hiking and spending time with friends and family.

Research Associate/ Consultant
Anna Onisiforou (BA, BSc, MSc, MSc, Ph.D.)
Dr. Onisiforou holds a B.Sc. (Hons) in Natural Sciences (Biology and Chemistry), an M.Sc. in Medicinal Chemistry, and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience from The Cyprus Institute of Neurology & Genetics (2018–2022), where she trained in the Bioinformatics Department. She also holds a B.A. (Hons) in Accounting and Finance and an M.Sc. in Finance and Financial Law.
Her research focuses on neurodegenerative, neuropsychiatric, and autoimmune diseases, with a particular interest in the role of microbial organisms in disease development and the emergence of comorbid conditions. She also investigates sex differences in disease susceptibility, aging, and longevity.
Dr. Onisiforou specializes in bioinformatics, with expertise in multi-omics analysis, data integration (single-cell and bulk), drug repurposing, and machine learning. She develops computational frameworks and network-based approaches to uncover molecular drivers of disease and inform treatment strategies. Her work bridges systems biology, precision medicine, and translational neuropharmacology to advance data-driven insights into complex disease mechanisms and therapeutic targets.

Graduate Student
Sydney Zimmermann
I am a Kansas State University graduate and a graduate student interested in behavioral neuroscience. I was previously a post-baccalaureate at the National Institutes of Health studying fear memory in mice. Outside of academia, I love to travel, dog-sit, and spend time outdoors with family and friends.

Graduate student
Gargee Pandya
Gargee is currently a first year PhD student in the Georgiou lab. She holds a BS in Behavioral Neuroscience from Nova Southeastern University. Before joining the Georgiou lab, Gargee worked as a research assistant at Nova Southeastern University and University of Texas-Houston. She has 2 years of experience working in both psychology and neuroscience labs. She was trained in working with both humans and mice, organizing a biobank, immunohistochemistry, and RNA analysis. In her free time, Gargee enjoys teaching yoga, painting, traveling, and spending time with friends and family.

Undergraduate Research assistant
Geramiah Bernard Drew
I am currently an undergraduate student completing a Neuroscience and Biology double major, with a minor in Chemistry. I'm also on the cheer team here at UWM, as well as an Advocate for the Lawton Scholarship program. After I graduate, I plan on continuing my education in the study of medicine with either an MD/DO, or an MD-PhD. When I'm not doing anything work related, I can usually be found playing a variety of instruments, spending time with loved ones, or reading a book.

Undergraduate research assistant
Daniel John Reddin
I am a current UWM undergraduate student with a double major in Neuroscience and psychology with a minor in biological sciences. I have been working in The Georgiou Lab for two years now and after graduation, I plan on furthering my education by pursuing a PhD in a neuroscience related field and look forward to understanding more about the brain and behavior. In my free time I enjoy relaxing with friends, playing basketball, and watching my favorite sports teams.

Undergraduate research assistant
Efe Zehra
Efe is currently completing her undergraduate education in psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She has been working at the Georgiou lab since Spring 2025 and hopes to gain more research experience in the upcoming years. Outside of the lab, she enjoys traveling, volunteering, rock climbing, and spending time with friends and family.
